welcome to churches together in sidcup a guide to the 16 ctis churches in sidcup, in the london borough of bexley, affiliated to churches together in kent. we aim to encourage the churches to be supportive of each other in their work and christian witness. -- --           churches together in sidcup                    easter         walk of witness            good friday, 25th april 2016 "be an apprentice: learn from the master" a t st. andrew`s we`ve just started a series of sermons on what it means to be a disciple of jesus. the greek word translated, ‘disciple’ meant a learner, an apprentice at a trade. if you are a follower of jesus today, you are one of his apprentices, learning how to advance the kingdom of god in this world as he did. in mark 3:13-19, mark records the occasion when jesus first called his twelve disciples. three points in particular stand out: 1. jesus “appointed twelve...that they might be with him...” our first calling as a disciple of jesus is to be with him. we might not be able to walk and eat with him as his first disciples did, but we can be with him as we read and study his word and let it shape our lives, and as we ask the holy spirit to make the person of jesus real to us – just as jesus said he would do (john 16:14). 2. if jesus` twelve disciples were all with him, then they were also all with one another. jesus deliberately formed a community around him, which we now call the church. to be an apprentice of jesus is to be in relationship with our fellow apprentices. 3. according to mark, the other reason jesus appointed twelve was “that he might send them out to preach...” so today we are called to share the good news of the gospel in ways that are culturally relevant. let`s honour the master by being productive apprentices! rev. rupert hankey, st. andrew’s church. maylands drive, sidcup "live in harmony... with each other" t he marvellous new testament verse of 1 corinthians 10.v31 says: “so whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of god.” that’s some challenge – yes? just imagine if all of us who read harmony agreed to set this as our target for the days, months and years ahead. what a difference it would make in our own lives, in the life of our local church and – best of all – in our local community! think about it. the principle (and practice) would apply to what each of us eats, drinks, says, thinks, reads and watches, as well as what we plan for the future and where we go. we should be seeking to do it all for the glory of god. i’ll say no more. i too need to chew over the implications of this verse and i hope you will, too. perhaps we should also pray about it. may god give all of us the strength and determination to live that sort of life for christ. george hider, sidcup baptist church, main road, sidcup "do not lose focus" g oing on holiday can be very exciting and refreshingly wonderful, a time to look forward to. however, it is very important not to get carried away by the excitement, but see it as an opportunity to share or spread the good news with someone in a more relaxed and conducive environment. in jn 4:6-45, jesus was resting by the well of jacob and his disciples had gone to buy bread when a samaritan lady came to fetch water where he was seated. the disciple would most probably have passed by and taken no notice of her. but, to jesus, it became an opportunity to share the gospel, one that won the whole town and restored her marriage. as you enjoy this summer break, look out for those whom the lord has sent to you in that particular location, either on the journey or on arrival. in mk 4:35-41, jesus was in the boat resting when a sudden storm arose. in seizing the development, he strengthened the faith of those with him in the boat. apostle paul in act 27:22- 39 was able to do the same thing without any hesitation. as you go on holidays this summer to various locations, please do not lose focus of your no.1 mandate in mk 3:14: he ordained the twelve to be with him and to preach the gospel. i wish you a wonderful and fruitful summer break as you win more people to the kingdom. richard odufisan, redeemed christian church of god victory assembly, new eltham -- t the foodbank has now been going nearly 4 years. we are now in a time of change and have grown from a single centre at avery hill to 5 centres across bexley borough. usage has changed with 2 sessions a week now at trinity baptist church, bexleyheath and queen street baptist church, erith where they have seen an increase in numbers. however less people are using avery hill, new community church and st andrews, albany park. sadly st andrews have taken the decision to close from 1st july. we thank them for their commitment and hard work over the past 4 years. avery hill are seeing less clients coming especially on tuesdays, although we continue to receive a lot of donations on tuesdays and have built up good relationships with people from local churches who regularly bring the donations in. we have decided to reduce the tuesday sessions down from 3 hours to 2 hours from 1st august. . numbers are down but we feel strongly that there are many people in need who we are not reaching, so plan is to try and recruit more voucher distributors at local schools, churches and gp surgeries. recently we have had some incidents across the service where clients have been abusing the system and have been abusive to volunteers. on one occasion leading to the police being involved. this has sadly led to these clients being banned from using the foodbank. currently, responsibility for the running of the foodbank sits with avery hill charitable trust and the church's trustees but the foodbank has now developed into a borough wide facility and we are looking at the possibility of it becoming a separate charity with its own trustees. we continue to see people's lives being touched. two recent examples are 4 iranian christian refugees who have been placed in welling and a lady whom we have helped on a number of occasions over the past 2 years who has now moved into more suitable accommodation, has called in to thank us for all the invaluable help given. rosemary hutton bexley food bank avery hill christian fellowship our current needs are: rice pudding rice squash tinned fruit tinned vegetables noodles custard toiletries toilet paper ======================================================= at the moment we do not need: soup baked beans pasta tea cereal thank you for your continued support, it's really appreciated. -- "something new from god" m y dad ran a corner shop – he sold a bit of everything. sometimes, ‘reps’ came to encourage him to order more stock or new lines. twice a year, he’d go to a trade display. in september the christmas goods were on view, and in december it was easter eggs!! in my first church, one of the families ran a wholesale plant business, selling to local garden centres and the like. the owner reckoned his year was much like my dad’s, and, i suppose, somewhat like mine. here i am, when everyone else is thinking about christmas, writing a letter suitable for the new year! but i’m not that sorry to leave the jesus of the manger behind. it’s a pity so many do not seem to want to let him grow up. but if we don’t, he can’t die on the cross for us, he can’t be raised to new life for us, he cannot open up the way to heaven for us. nor can he send the holy spirit in his place; neither can he sit at his father’s side, interceding for us. christmas was just the start of something new from god. what new things will you be for him and do for him in 2016? it’s time to get yourself right in the centre of his will again. happy new year rev. alan mason, foots cray baptist church, sidcup. -- dear churches in sidcup i just wanted to write to you all, to say thank you so much for your constant prayers, support and generous donations. sometimes we can't see the floor because of your extreme generosity and kindness. without your support, we could not have helped as many families as we have. at a recent prayer meeting for churches together, i was asked to give an update on the work we do here at the foodbank and where we have been blessed. so here we go!........ f rom april 2013-2014, we fed 993 children & 1,218 adults, total 2,211 from april 2014-today, we have already fed 1,793 children & 2,174 adults, total 3,967 the main reasons for need are still caused by benefit changes, sanctions, benefit delays and domestic violence and low income. i started this role in july 2013. at this time we only had avery hill open, struggling to weigh things with bathroom scales, a computer that didn't work, lots of food, and not many clients to support. we had kindly been given some temporary storage with footscray baptist church, but they needed that space as the roof was leaking and needed to be repaired. we had no contacts for people to signpost, except for the job centre and a few churches, so i had a lot of communication and organising to do. just before i started at the foodbank, i had a prophecy that i would be starting work where i would have influence in the community, and that doors would open and people would wonder how i managed to accomplish the things i did. i also had a prayer where 3 words came to me, abundance, patience and connections.god has really blessed our work and ministry, and the prophecy and words from god are true. we have been blessed with distribution centres in sidcup: avery hill christian fellowship; new community church; st. andrews church. erith: queen st baptist church. bexleyheath: trinity baptist church. this helps us to serve all clients in all parts of the borough. we have approximately 80 voucher distributors, including churches, schools, council, social workers and health workers, job centres and citizens advice bureau. we have been provided with storage by council & l&q housing. supermarkets have trolleys for us: tesco, welling; waitrose, sidcup; sainsburys, bexleyheath; asda, bexleyheath; morrisons, erith. i have been blessed with a lady who collects most of these donations weekly. new generation church support us with transporting food with their van. we now have industrial weighing scales at all sites. the council have provided a brand new computer. my biggest blessings of course are the team leaders and volunteers. they are all truly sent from god, i would call them treasure. they truly love jesus and care about others in such an overwhelming way. they work so hard. of course none of this would be possible without god totally supplying all of these things. every day i feel blessed to be working in god's house. it's truly amazing to constantly feel the holy spirit working with us witnessing to the love of god. thank you jesus. every blessing gill bates bexley foodbank manager our current needs are: rice pudding rice squash tinned fruit tinned visit their website at www.stlawrenceschurch.org.uk 2015/16 ctis chairman’s report f irst of all i want to thank ctis for giving me this opportunity. it’s never easy balancing a young family, a busy job and this, but i’ve really enjoyed doing my bit in helping move ctis forward for another successful year. i want to thank the executive committee: mike, simon and john - and especially pamela, the success of the group is thanks to her hard work, organisation and dedication. i'd also like to thank all of you who do so much work year in year out as ctis reps. in particular mike barnes on the website, tom for his work on harmony and the reverend stephen sealy for the great work in putting together the fantastic services at st johns. it been a very busy year as usual – particular highlights include: the excellent christmas service and remembrance service at st john’s. a fantastic unity service at holy trinity; the walk of witness and lent lunches. one thing that has really stood out for me is that the numbers attending our services and events are increasing markedly – we should recognise this, be thankful for it and build on it so we can engage ever more members of the community. one question we should ask ourselves each year is why do we do this? one passage from the bible springs to mind: “so if there is any encouragement in christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the spirit, any affection and sympathy, complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind.” this is what i believe guides us at churches together. what i have enjoyed most is the unity, we have shown through these events as christians and members of the sidcup community. the confidence and pride we have shown in our faith has been so important and so meaningful. i thank you all for a great year and pray that we keep this up for many, many years to come. mike conway, over to you. oliver dean former chairman 2015/16 chairman's annual report agm on 23rd april 2015 f irst, i want to thank the members of ctis executive: oliver dean, who will become the next chairman; mike conway who will become the next vice-chairman; john wiltshire, the treasurer; janet norton our minute-taker and pamela steed our distributor of information. then i want to thank a sort of outer ring of supporters, people to whom we can go because they know what to do: tom baker, stephen sealey and three mikes; baldry, attewell and barnes. next i want to thank all who make our regular activities to just happen - so those who organise the food bank, lark in the park, the walk of witness, the lent groups, the carol singing, the lent lunches, christian aid week, the civic carol service, remembrance sunday, sponsoring our third world child, keeping the website up to date and so on. in addition we added come extra activities this year. a pentecost celebration, the service marking the centenary of the beginning of the great war/world war 1, our financial help in running a mission at a local secondary school, the hustings before the general election and pray, love, bexley [sidcup branch]. particular thanks go to george hider for knocking the ministers' meetings into some kind of cohesive shape. finally i want to thank all the church representatives that attend the general meetings and bring news from and to the churches. plans for the future include links with the local credit unions and further involvement with cap (christians against poverty). at the beginning of the year i promised to go to as many of the regular saturday prayer meetings as possible and to visit as many of the churches as i could. i managed to attend each prayer meeting when i was in sidcup and all but 4 of the churches. i am minded to point out that ctis should always be on the new look out to do new things for god in sidcup, and to look out for things that maybe have now had their day. i am concerned that not all of our churches play a significant part in ctis and wonder whether the executive need to find new ways of engaging with the more reluctant churches. i have enjoyed the privilege of this role very much. thank you. alan j mason foots cray baptist church reduce the tuesday sessions down from 3 hours to 2 hours from 1st august. . numbers are down but we feel strongly that there are many people in need who we are not reaching, so plan is to try and recruit more voucher distributors at local schools, churches and gp surgeries. recently we have had some incidents across the service where clients have been abusing the system and have been abusive to volunteers. on one occasion leading to the police being involved. this has sadly led to these clients being banned from using the foodbank. currently, responsibility for the running of the foodbank sits with avery hill charitable trust and the church's trustees but the foodbank has now developed into a borough wide facility and we are looking at the possibility of it becoming a separate charity with its own trustees. we continue to see people's lives being touched. two recent examples are 4 iranian christian refugees who have been placed in welling and a lady whom we have helped on a number of occasions over the past 2 years who has now moved into more suitable accommodation, has called in to thank us for all the invaluable help given. rosemary hutton bexley food bank avery hill
